Honoring Our Past

Each Memorial Day weekend, the Brethren of Aerospace Lodge No. 800 in Heath, Ohio, demonstrate what it truly means to be Committed to the Craft. They gather at Cedar Hill Cemetery to honor the Life and legacy of Most Worshipful Brother Samuel Stacker Williams, Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio in 1887. This continuing tradition reflects both reverence for the past and dedication to the future of Freemasonry!

This annual graveside ceremony is much more than a moment of remembrance. It is a living expression of the values that define our Fraternity. By taking the time each Memorial Day weekend to stand beside the grave of this distinguished Ohio Mason, the Brethren affirm that the contributions of those who came before us will never be forgotten. They understand that preserving our history is not the responsibility of one generation alone – it is the duty of every Mason.

Most Worshipful Brother Samuel Stacker Williams devoted his life to strengthening the Craft and serving the Brethren of Ohio. He was a great Masonic student and collected one of the most outstanding Masonic Libraries in the United States. The library was donated to the Grand Lodge of Ohio and is the basis of the Grand Lodge’s Library! His extensive correspondence, much of which is preserved in the Grand Lodge Library, led to him being one of the most widely known Masons in the country.

The Grand Master’s theme, Committed to the Craft, is beautifully illustrated through this enduring tradition. Commitment is found in showing up, in preserving our customs, in teaching our history, and ensuring that the names and accomplishments of our Masonic leaders continue to be spoken with gratitude and respect. The members of Aerospace Lodge No. 800 do exactly that. Their presence each Memorial Day is a testament to the idea that Freemasonry is strengthened when we remember those who helped build it! By honoring Most Worshipful Brother Samuel Stacker Williams, these Brethren not only preserve his legacy but also reaffirm their own commitment to carrying the principles of Freemasonry into the future. That is what it means to be Committed to the Craft!
